On Secular Churches and the Mystical Sacrifice
July 25, 2019
Hieromonk Gabriel

A headline caught my eye several days ago: “They Tried to Start a Church Without God. For a While, It Worked.” While the concept of a church without God is beyond doubt bizarre, it nevertheless also makes perfect sense. In our age of loneliness, amidst the near-total collapse of practically every traditional form of community and social structure, to abandon Christianity is to hurtle oneself into the void foretold by Nietzsche when he proclaimed the “murder” of God:

What were we doing when we unchained this earth from its sun? Whither is it moving now? Whither are we moving? Away from all suns? Are we not plunging continually? Backward, sideward, forward, in all directions? Is there still any up or down? Are we not straying, as through an infinite nothing? Do we not feel the breath of empty space? Has it not become colder? Is not night continually closing in on us?

Living in cities, we become strangers. We visit our friends by sitting alone and staring at screens. Moving from job to job and from place to place, we remain rootless — only half-committed to our own lives. When my parents moved into a new subdivision outside Raleigh, North Carolina in 1999, they purchased the last new house on the street. In less than two decades, every single family on that street had moved away besides them. More and more, our lives have absolutely nothing to do with the people right around us. Half of all American children will even experience the shattering of their own home through divorce before the day they turn eighteen.

In a world such as this, churches are among the last remaining havens of love and community — although even this has been largely eroded in American life due to the phenomenon known as “church-shopping,” in which Christianity becomes cafeteria-style: merely another consumer commodity. So it is no surprise when the article tells us that Justina Walford, upon apostatizing and moving to New York City, “had never felt more alone.”

It is interesting to note that Justina grew up in a non-religious family, and converted to Christianity on her own as a child. She was apparently quite zealous, and even wanted to be a pastor herself. It is even more interesting to note the reason she lost her faith: it was “a casualty of overseas travel that made her question how any one religious community could have a monopoly on truth.”

Upon reading this, I involuntarily thought of a pithy quotation of Sir James Stephen: “The notorious result of unlimited freedom of thought and discussion is to produce general scepticism on many subjects in the vast majority of minds.” Those who expose themselves to the confusion and tumult of the world without being firmly grounded in the Truth find themselves fulfilling an observation made many centuries ago in the Tao Te Ching: “The longer you travel, the less you know.” The modern world has strangely convinced us that such ignorance is a sign of knowledge, and that a truly enlightened person must necessarily inundate himself with the greatest possible volume of cacophonous nonsense in order to “make up one’s mind for oneself.” That to do so generally engenders confusion, skepticism, disbelief, and ultimately apathy should really not come as any surprise.

To the Orthodox Christian: obey the words of St. Ignatius Brianchaninov, and of all the Holy Fathers!

Once again I address you, faithful son of the Eastern Church, with a sincere, good word. This word is not my own—it belongs to the Holy Fathers. All my counsels come from them.

Keep your mind and heart from false teaching. Do not even speak about Christianity with people who have been infected with false thoughts; do not read books on Christianity that were written by heretics.

The Holy Spirit accompanies all Truth. He is the Spirit of Truth. The devil accompanies and acts together with every lie. He is false, and the father of lies.

He who reads the books of a heretic immediately communes with an evil, dark spirit of falsehood. This should not seem strange or incredible to you—this is the unanimous opinion of the Holy Fathers…

Only those religious books that are written by the Holy Fathers of the universal Orthodox Church are acceptable to read. The Orthodox Church requires this of her children.

If you think otherwise, or find this command of the Church less authoritative than your own opinions or the opinions of others who agree with you, then you are no longer a child of the Church, but a critic of the Church.

Do you call me a one-sided, unenlightened rigorist? Leave me my one-sidedness and all my other deficiencies. I would rather be a deficient, unenlightened child of the Orthodox Church than an apparently perfect man who would dare to instruct the Church, who would allow himself to disobey the Church, to separate from it. My words will be pleasant to the true children of the Orthodox Church.

Let me be clear: I am not suggesting that we get together and burn books. I am not advocating enforced censorship by the State. I am simply suggesting that we, spiritual infants that we are, and especially seeing as how we generally cannot be bothered to fill ourselves with the spiritual food of the Holy Fathers, at the very least heed their advise and refrain from drinking poison on an empty stomach.

But let us return to Justina. Having been sadly persuaded of the non-existence of God by the faithlessness of men, having uprooted herself from her home and family, and having arrived in New York City amidst a vast multitude of people, she found herself feeling intensely alone.

Then Walford read an article about Sunday Assembly, a community started in Great Britain in 2013 that had spread quickly across the Atlantic to her doorstep. Members gather on Sundays, sing together, listen to speakers, and converse over coffee and donuts. Meetings are meant to be just like Church services—but without God. “That’s it,” she thought. “That’s what I want.”

Such groups apparently sprang up and grew rapidly until about three years ago. This article in The Atlantic tries to figure out why they began to die out just as quickly as they arose. The surface-level explanation is quite simple: after a while, people just got tired of making the necessary efforts and preparations to organize each Sunday’s concert/lecture/what-have-you, and the whole thing just fizzled out. But somewhat surprisingly, the article also identifies at least part of what was going on underneath:

Ara Norenzayan, a psychologist studying religion at the University of British Columbia, told me that secular communities might have trouble getting members to inconvenience themselves, as people of faith routinely do for their congregations. He cited a study by Richard Sosis, an anthropologist at the University of Connecticut who studied 200 American communes founded in the 19th century. Sosis found that 39 percent of religious communes were still functioning 20 years after their start, but only 6 percent of secular communes were alive after the same amount of time. And he determined that a single variable was making this difference: the number of sacrifices—such as giving up alcohol, following a dress code, or fasting—that each commune demanded of its members.

For religious communes, the more sacrifices demanded, the longer they lasted; however, this connection didn’t hold for secular communes. The implication, Norenzayan said, was that challenging rituals and taxing rules work only when they’re part of something sacred; once the veil of sacrality is removed, people no longer care to commit to things that demand their time and dedication. “If it’s ‘Come and go as you wish,’ that’s not going to work,” he said. Even if secular congregations could create a sense of the sacred, they tend to attract people who are explicitly looking for a community without costly rituals—one that lets you do what you want.

It seems as though simple etymology has eluded the author: the word “sacrifice” literally means “to make sacred.” To “make a sacrifice” in common parlance means to give something up, but it literally means to give something to God. It means not to lose something, but rather to make that thing holy.

Without God there can be no sacrifice, but merely an exchange. I invest my time, I get something out of it. If I don’t “get something out of it,” then I simply stop investing my time. Apparently, there is only so much “something” that can be gotten out of singing Bon Jovi songs and eating doughnuts with strangers.

What really struck me about the article, however, is the very idea that singing Bon Jovi songs and eating doughnuts has any resemblance at all to the Church. It manifests all too clearly the modern notion that the Church fundamentally consists in people getting together to talk and sing about God. If this is the case, then it’s no great stretch to conceive of a “church without God” that consists in people getting together simply to talk and sing.

But in reality the Church consists not in talking and singing, nor even in the sacrifices that we make in order to be able to do so. The Church consists not in sacrifice, but in the Sacrifice: the Mystical Sacrifice of the Eucharist. In the Divine Liturgy Christ offers us Himself, and we offer ourselves to Him: “the Holy Things are for the Holy!” Without the Mystical Sacrifice, there is no Church, and neither speech nor song can make it so.

Metropolitan Tikhon (Shevkunov) in his wonderful book Everyday Saints explains the meaning of this great and terrible phrase, “the Holy Things are for the Holy!”:

What this means is that the Body and the Blood of Christ are now being taken in by holy people. But who are these people? They are the people who are now in our Church, priests and laypersons alike, coming here to us with faith and waiting for Communion. They do this because they are faithful Christians who are yearning to draw closer to God. It turns out that in spite of our frailties and sins, we, the people who compose the Church on earth are, to God, also saints.

It seems to me that it is for this reason that so many left their churches in the first place — because they found there neither God nor saints but merely men, not Communion but merely community. And as Abba Dorotheos teaches, as long as we are absent from the Mystical Sacrifice we will remain absent also from one another, no matter how many songs we sing or how many doughnuts we eat in one another’s company:

I shall give you an example from the Fathers so that you may understand the power of the word. Suppose that there is a circle on the earth, as if drawn by a compass. The center is exactly the middle of the circle. Take care to understand what I mean. Let us suppose that this circle is the world and God is the center. The straight lines drawn from the circumference to the center are the lives of men. As far as the saints, desiring to approach God, move inward, they become near to God and near each other and as far as they approach God, they approach each other. As far as they approach each other, they approach God. You should understand separation in the same way. When they move away from God and follow external things, it is evident that as far as they move away and become distant from God, they distance themselves from each other and as they distance themselves from each other, they distance themselves from God. This is the very nature of love. In as far as we are outside and do not love God, each one of us is also distanced from his neighbor, but if we love God, they more we approach Him through love for Him, the more we are united to our neighbor through love, as as much as we are united to our neighbor, we are united to God.

So let all of us who are lonely, let all of us who seek for meaning and purpose and sacrifice and love take heed to the words of St. Ignatius of Antioch (who once sat on the lap of Christ as a young child and later eagerly gave his life as a martyr, longing above all else to be “the wheat of God, ground by the teeth of beasts to become the pure bread of Christ”):

Stand fast, brethren, in the faith of Jesus Christ, and in His love, in His passion, and in His resurrection. Do ye all come together in common… breaking one and the same bread, which is the medicine of immortality, and the antidote which prevents us from dying, a cleansing remedy driving away evil, which causes that we should live in God through Jesus Christ.

Amen.

The Struggle Against The Normal Life

The Struggle Against The Normal Life
July 18, 2019 · Fr. Stephen Freeman

Within the Christianity of our time, the great spiritual conflict, unknown to almost all, is between a naturalistic/secular world of modernity and the sacramental world of classical Christianity. The first presumes that a literal take on the world is the most accurate. It tends to assume a closed system of cause and effect, ultimately explainable through science and manageable through technology. Modern Christians, quite innocently, accept this account of the world with the proviso that there is also a God who, on occasion, intervenes within this closed order. The naturalist unbeliever says, “Prove it.”

The sacramental world of classical Christianity speaks a wholly different language. It presumes that the world as we see it is an expression of a greater reality that is unseen. It presumes that everything is a continuing gift and a means of communion with the good God who created it. The meaning and purpose of things is found in that which is not seen, apart from which we can only reach false conclusions. The essential message of Christ, “The Kingdom of God is at hand,” is a proclamation of the primacy of this unseen world and its coming reign in the restoration of all things (apokatastasis, cf. Acts 3:21).

The assumptions of these two worldviews could hardly be more contradictory. The naturalistic/secular model has the advantage of sharing a worldview with contemporary culture. As such, it forms part of what most people would perceive as “common sense” and “normal.” Indeed, the larger portion of Christian believers within that model have no idea that any other Christian worldview exists.

The classical/sacramental worldview was the only Christian worldview for most of the centuries prior to the Reformation. Even then, that worldview was only displaced through revolution and state sponsorship. Nonetheless, the sacramental understanding continues within the life of the Orthodox Church, as well as many segments of Catholicism. Its abiding presence in the Scriptures guarantees that at least a suspicion of “something else” will haunt some modern Christian minds.

An assumption of the secular/naturalist worldview is that information itself is “objective” in character: it is equally accessible to everyone. The classical worldview assumes something quite different. “Blessed are the pure in heart,” Christ says, “for they shall see God.” The Kingdom of God is not an inert object that yields itself to public examination. The knowledge of God and of all spiritual things requires a different mode of seeing and understanding. St. Paul says it this way:

But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. (1Co 2:14)

This understanding disturbs the sensibilities of many contemporary Christians. Some go so far as to suggest that it is “gnostic” (by this they mean that the very notion of spiritual knowledge that is less than democratic is suspect). Sola Scriptura is a modern concept that posits the Scriptures as subject to objective interpretation. The Scriptures thus belong to the world of public, democratic  debate, whose meaning belongs within the marketplace of opinion. The Scriptures are “my Bible.”

The classical model is, in fact, the teaching found in the Scriptures. It utterly rejects the notion of spiritual knowledge belonging to the same category as the naturalistic/secular world. It clearly understands that the truth of things is perceived only through the heart (nous) and that an inward change is required. It is impossible to encounter the truth and remain unchanged.

The classical model, particularly as found within Orthodoxy, demands repentance and asceticism as a normative part of the spiritual life. These actions do not earn a reward, but are an inherent part of the cleansing of the heart and the possibility of perceiving the truth.

The rationalization (secular/rationalist) of the gospel has also given rise to modern “evangelism.” If no particular change is required in a human being in order to perceive the truth of the gospel, then rational argument and demonstration becomes the order of the day. Indeed, modern evangelism is largely indistinguishable from modern marketing. They were born from the same American social movements.

The classical model tends to be slower in its communication, for what is being transmitted is the fullness of the tradition and the transformation of each human life. Evangelism, in this context, has little to no relationship with marketing. The primary form for the transmission of the gospel is the community of the Church. The Christian faith, in its fullness, is properly only seen in an embodied community of believers living in sacramental union with God through Christ by the Holy Spirit. In the early Church, the catechumenate generally lasted for as much as three years. The formation that took place was seen as an essential preparation for the Christian life. “Making a decision” was almost beside the point.

The struggle between classical/sacramental Christianity and modernity (including its various Christianities) is not a battle over information. The heart of the struggle is for sacramental Christianity to simply remain faithful to what it is. That struggle is significant, simply for the fact that it takes place within a dominant culture that is largely its antithesis.

A complicating factor in this struggle is the fact that the dominant culture (naturalistic/secular) has taken up traditional Christian vocabulary and changed its meaning. This creates a situation in which classical Christianity is in constant need of defining and understanding its own language in contradistinction to the prevailing cultural mind. The most simple terms, “faith, belief, Baptism, Communion, icon, forgiveness, sin, repentance,” are among those things that have to be consistently re-defined. Every conversation outside a certain circle requires this effort, and, even within that circle, things are not always easy.

Such an effort might seem exhausting. The only position of relaxation within the culture is the effortless agreement with what the prevailing permutations tell us on any given day. Human instinct tends towards the effortless life – and the secular mentality constantly reassures us that only the effortless life is normal. Indeed, “normal, ordinary, common,” and such terms, are all words invented by modernity as a self-description. Such concepts are utterly absent from the world of Scripture. Oddly, no one lived a “normal” life until relatively recently.

That which is “normal” is nothing of the sort. It is the purblind self-assurance that all is well when nothing is well.

God have mercy on us.

http://artoklasia.blogspot.com/2019/05/thank-god-for-everything-that-happens.html

Anthony the Great is a realist. His rules or canons aren't some formula he's found and thrown to us. Each of them has something unique concerning the life of the monk and, if one is broken, everything comes crashing down. He says we have to pray without ceasing but at the same time thank God for everything that happens to us. He uses a coordinating conjunction because these two  things can't be separated, they go together. We thank God for pleasant things, but even more for something else: in life, matters don't always turn out as we would want them to. We pray, for instance, and it seems that God doesn't listen. We ask for our health, and our illness worsens. We ask God to grant us certain things and He gives us nothing. Everything's back to front.

People who don't learn to thank God for everything, especially for adversity, will never advance even an inch beyond where they were when their mothers bore them. They'll make no progress. And, of course, when their mothers bore them, such people were innocent babes, they had a natural sanctity, whereas we have cruelty, and knowledge that makes us guilty. So we have to learn to thank God. When we have bad thoughts, when our brother says something and we feel hatred within us, we must, at that very time, thank God and smile at our brother. Unless we do so, it's impossible to advance a step, because everything will seem perverse to us. And then, in particular, others and our circumstances will cause us to have bad thoughts, temptations, passions and contrariness.

Ceaseless prayer and gratitude to God for all that happens to us are the necessary conditions for a natural life. If people don't thank God for everything, they can't even pray, nor live in the monastic state. People have to be grateful for whatever happens to them in the monastery, whether that comes from their inner world or from the brotherhood, from enemies or from demons. For instance, a monk has bad thoughts which torment him. He shouldn't be worried, but should rejoice and thank God. He should say to the demon: "Get behind me, Satan" and send him on his way, or, if he refuses to leave, the monk should be able to say: "The bed's big enough for the two of us. Sleep with me. Just turn over onto the other side so that I don't have to put up with your foul breath". The demon will then leave like lightning.

Unceasing prayer and gratitude for everything are directly connected to our personal rule. In other words, anyone can perform his rule when he learns to pray ceaselessly. And anyone who performs his rule can have unceasing prayer. If he wants to separate his rule from unceasing prayer, both will come tumbling down. This is basic and we must remember it. Miss your rule for two days and you'll see that you'll forget to say "Glory to you, our God" even once a day. That's a law.

“Never confuse the person, formed in the image of God, with the evil that is in him: because evil is but a chance misfortune, an illness, a devilish reverie. But the very essence of that person is the image of God, and this remains in him despite every disfigurement.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WB2enMd2Ilk&t=3990s

"Once on Mount Athos there was a monk who lived in Karyes. He drank and got drunk every day and was the cause of scandal to the pilgrims. Eventually he died and this relieved some of the faithful who went on to tell Elder Paisios that they were delighted that this huge problem was finally solved.

Father Paisios answered them that he knew about the death of the monk, after seeing the entire battalion of angels who came to collect his soul. The pilgrims were amazed and some protested and tried to explain to the Elder of whom they were talking about, thinking that the Elder did not understand.

Elder Paisios explained to them: "This particular monk was born in Asia Minor, shortly before the destruction by the Turks when they gathered all the boys. So as not to take him from their parents, they would take him with them to the reaping, and so he wouldn't cry, they just put raki into his milk in order for him to sleep. Therefore he grew up as an alcoholic. There he found an elder and said to him that he was an alcoholic. The elder told him to do prostrations and prayers every night and beg the Panagia to help him to reduce by one the glasses he drank.

After a year he managed with struggle and repentance to make the 20 glasses he drank into 19 glasses. The struggle continued over the years and he reached 2-3 glasses, with which he would still get drunk."

The world for years saw an alcoholic monk who scandalized the pilgrims, but God saw a fighter who fought a long struggle to reduce his passion.

Without knowing what each one is trying to do what he wants to do, what right do we have to judge his effort?"

(The Modern Project)

An Exercise in Empathy

2009/2/15 (Ethiopian calendar)
2016/10/25 (European calendar)

(pdf)

[Note: An Amharic version of this post will appear sometime!]

In the next few posts, I will attempt, just attempt, an exercise in empathy. I will try and put myself in the shoes of Ethiopia's various political groups and constituencies and describe the truth about Ethiopian politics how they see it – from their perspective. I will start with either Oromo ethnic nationalists or the EPRDF, or maybe just the TPLF. And I'll keep going as much as I can.

Why this exercise? I'll first answer from within the 'conflict resolution' paradigm. Empathy – trying to grasp the point of view, the feelings, the thoughts, etc of others – is an important tool, perhaps the most important, in conflict resolution. The idea is that if you can empathize, you can communicate better, that is you can communicate in a way that your opponents can understand, and of course you can better envision solutions that your opponents can accept. Empathy also builds trust and understanding, which needless to say are important for living together peacefully.

Second, as this blog is written from an Orthodox Christian perspective, I'll explain from this point of view as well. Empathy is basic Christianity. Our fundamental belief is that Christ came and died for us out of compassion – to share our suffering and redeem it. This is similar to empathy, but greater, as it involves not only sharing the Other's experience, but doing so with the hope of bring about something better. Further, avoiding judgement is a basic teaching of the Church. “To judge sins is the business of one who is sinless, but who is sinless except God?... To judge a man who has gone astray is a sign of pride, and God resists the proud.” says St Dorotheus of Gaza. So, following Christ's example of compassion and his command not to judge, a Christian as a matter of course must try to be empathetic.

I hope my little exercise will help shed some light on solutions for Ethiopia's problems. So, I'll give it a try over my next few articles. Your feedback as always is much appreciated.

(God is everywhere present and in all things)
