Brief Note on Ethiopia and the West: Realism and Credibility

Over the last year or so, we have all seen the West - USA, EU, and some allies - engage openly in unrelenting hybrid warfare against Ethiopia via their proxy, the TPLF rebels. They have made no attempts to hide their intentions, no attempts to equivocate or pretend to be balanced. It has been all out war. If the Ethiopian government wins the war, and it certainly looks that way today, how should Ethiopia manage its relationship with the West.

In my opinion, Ethiopia has to follow the standard geopolitical path of realism. Realism would dictate that Ethiopia has to realistically assess its interests and those of the West, and engage work together with the West where the interests coincide. Just as, for example, Russia or China work closely with the West on many matters. Ethiopia should not, out of emotion and the need for revenge, fail to rationally assess its relationship with the West.

On the other hand, and this, I think, is crucial, Ethiopia has to adhere to the other standard tenet of geopolitics, and that is credibility. The Ethiopian government must favour and reward those allies who stood by Ethiopia in its fight against the TPLF and the West, and it must punish the West for its actions. The details of how this is done are of course to be studied and will evolve, but Ethiopia has to be seen to be able to reciprocate credibly, and to follow through on its rhetoric credibly. 

The 'democracy manual' is not for us...

I'm afraid that too many of our political elites think that bringing about political peace and justice in Ethiopia is just a matter of following the 'democracy manual', that is, implementing the standard formula (that comes with funding) given by organizations such as the NDI and NED and many others eager to neocolonise. Just look how well this formula has done in Eastern Europe, where most countries are rapidly depopulating and are wallowing in depression, psychological and economic. Or in Iraq, Afghanistan, Ukraine, or many of the other countries that well funded 'democracy promotion' NGO's have had the opportunity to work their magic! I, for one, wouldn't want Ethiopia to become another Latvia.

Our elites need to think beyond copy and paste. Beyond Huntington and Fukuyama and whoever else is the mode. They need to learn to look to their own rich heritage to find robust solutions for our political and social problems, solutions built on stone rather than sand. Ethiopians value peace, love, and forgiveness. These are fundamental characteristics of our tradition. We may not always practice what we value - in fact, we often don't - but these are the things we value. The overwhelming support that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed received for his (simple) message of peace, love, and forgiveness is a testament to this. I cannot imagine another country where such a simple message would have worked the wonders it did in Ethiopia.

Elites: We need confidence in our tradition and we need imagination. Please move beyond your academic indoctrination. Look towards your elders. Look towards your rich tradition with neither rose nor dark coloured glasses, but with the right mix of empathy and understanding. Develop self-confidence as Ethiopians, as well as a prudent humility. Aim for the goal of Ethiopia not becoming another Germany, but becoming truly Ethiopian.

ልሂቃኖቻችን ዛሬም የምዕራባዊነት እስረኞች…

እምብዛም ልሂቃን እና ምሁራኖቻችን ዛሬም በምዕራባዊነት አምልኮ የተለከፍን ነን። እንግሊዝን፤ ጀርማንን፤ አሜሪካንን ገልብጦ እንዳለ ወደ ኢትዮጵያ ከማምጣት ውጭ ሃሳብ የለንም። ምናልባት የኢትዮጵያ ህዝብ ሙሉ ለሙሉ እንደ ምዕራብ ሀገር ለመሆን ዝግጁ ባለመሆኑ ጉዞውን ቀስ በ ቀስ እንጀምራለን እንል ይሆናል። ግን ግቡ አንድ ነው፤ ኢትዮጵያን እንደ «ፈረንጅ» ሀገር ማድረግ ነው።

ይህ አካሄድ ለኔ unimaginative ብቻ ሳይሆን ለሀገራችን የማይሆንም ነው ብዬ አምናለሁ። የኢትዮጵያዊነት ምሁራ ዶናልድ ሌቪን እንደሚያስታውሱን፤

"The vitality of a people springs from feeling at home in its culture and from a sense of kinship with its past. The negation of all those sentiments acquired in childhood leaves man adrift, a prey to random images and destructive impulses…"

ለኔ፤ በግሌ፤ ኢትዮጵያን እስክስታ፤ እንጀራ፤ ወዘተ ያላት ፈረንጅ ሀገር ማድረግ ትርጉም የለውም። ማንነትን ማጣት ነው። ባህላዊን እሴቶችን ማጣት ነው። አብሮነትን አጥተን ብጨኞችን መሆን ነው። ፍቅር አጥተን ነግ በኔዎች መሆን ማለት ነው። እምነት አጥተን እምነት የለሾችን መሆን ማለት ነው። ለኔ ይህ ትሩጉም የለውም።

ግን ልሂቃን እና ምሁራኖቻችን የሀገር ወጋችን ገብቷቸው አክብረውት መራመድ ያቃተን ምክንያት ይገባኛል። በመጀመርያ ወጋችንን በደምብ አላከበርንም። በጃንሆይ ዘመን የነበረው የፍትህ እጦት እና ጭቆና (በምንም ደረጃ ቢሆንም) የመጀመርያ ሀገር በቀል ፈረንጆቻችን እንዲወለዱ አደረገ። በሃይማኖት ተቋሞቻችን የነበረው ግብዝነትም እንዲሁ ጥላቻ ፈጠሮ ምሁራን ወደ ማርክሲዝም እንዲሄዱ ጋበዘ። ይህ ለምሁራኖቻችን ፈረንጅ አምላኪነት አንዱ ምክንያት ነው።

ሌላው ምክንያት ዘመናዊ ትምሕርት አሰጣጡ ነው። ሶሻል ሳየንስ ተማሪዎቻችን ከሞላ ጎደል የሚማሩት የዘመኑ ርዕዮት ዓለም ነው። ርዕዮት ዓለሙ እንደ እውነት ነው የሚሰበክላቸው አብዛኞቹ አለ ጥያቄ ይቀበሉታል። እንደ ምሁራን መቀጠል ከፈጉ ደግሞ ምርጫ የላቸውም። ከዘመኑ ርዕዮት ዓለም የተለየ አስተሳሰብ በባልደረቦቻቸው እንዲናቁ እና እንዲዘለፉ ነው የሚያደርጋቸው። ስራቸውንም ያጣሉ ማንም ዩኒቨርሲቲ ወይም ሌላ ተቋም አይቀጥራቸውም። ስለዚህም የዘመኑን ርዕዮት ዓለምን እንደ ጣኦት ያመልኩታል።

ሶስተኛው ምክንያት የኢትዮጵያ ነባራዊ ችግሮች ናቸው። አስተዋይ ያልሆነ ሰው ሃብታሙ እና ምቾት የተሞላውን ምዕራብ ዓለም ከኢትዮጵያ ጋር አወዳድሮ ምዕራብ ነው ትክክል ይላል። ማስተዋል የማይችል። ጠልቆ ማሰብ እና ማየት የማይችል። መሳደቤ አይደለም፤ እኔም ወደ እንደዚህ አይነት ቀላል ድምዳሜ ተስቤ አውቃለሁ።

ስለዚህ ዛሬ በኢትዮጵያ ታላቅ የምሁራን እና ልሂቃን እጥረት (deficit) አለ። እምብዛሙ ውጭ ሀገር የሚያየውን ፎርሙላ ወደ ሀገር ማምጣት ብቻ ነው የሚታየው። ማንነቱን አጥቷል። ማርክሲዝም ይሁን፤ «ሊበራሊዝም» ይሁን፤ ሶሻሊዝም ይሁን፤ «ማርኬት ኤኮኖሚ» ይሁን፤ ሴኩላሪዝም ይሁን፤ ፌሚኒዝም ይሁን፤ ዴሞክራሲ ይሁን ለምሁራኖቻችን ጣኦት ሆነዋል። ለምን ኢትዮጵያዊነት እንደሚያሰኝንም አላውቅም። አሜሪካዊ መሆን ይሻለናል ማንነታችን አሜሪካዊ ከሆነ።

ፋንታሁን ዋቄ እንዳለው ታላቅ paradigm shift ያስፈልገናል። አቢይ አህመድም ደጋግመው እንደሚሉት የሀገራዊ እሴቶቻችንን ተምረን አቅፈን እንራመድ። እሴቶቻችንን እንፈተሽ እና እናሟላ። አንድ አጭር ምሳሌ ልስጥ፤ ሃይማኖታዊ መቻቻል (https://asfawdarguemeshal.blogspot.com/2018/04/blog-post_3.html)። የሀገራችንን ወግ የማያውቅ የሀገራችን ሃይማኖቶች መቻቻልን አያውቁም ይላል። ወይን መቻቻል የሚችሉት መሰረታቸውን ትተው ባህል ብቻ ሲሆኑ ነው ይላል። ግን ከላይ እንደጠቀስኩት ጽሁፌ በኦርቶዶክስ ክርስትና ለምሳሌ ከመቻቻል አልፎ ፍቅር ነው ዋናው መርህ! ሙስሊሙን መቻል (አሉታዊ ነገር ነው tolerate) የለብኝም መውደድ ነው ያለብኝ! ግን አብዛኞች ምሁሮቻችን መቻቻልን ከምዕራባዊነት እና ሴኩላሪዝም ያያይዙታል! ይህ ትንሽ ምሳሌ ነው። ወጋችንን እንፈትሽ። የምዕራብ ርዕዮት ዓለም እስረኞች አንሁን። ለራሳችን ማንነት ክብር እና ፍቅር ይኑረን። እራሳችንን እንወቅ።
